Tully Ice Harvest Festival

leave a comment »

The Tully Ice Harvest Festival takes place on Green Lake in Tully, New York once a year. Tully is located an hour from Syracuse, New York. The Ice Harvest Festival provides a way for the people of Tully and surrounding areas to have access to large amounts of ice. Unfortunately, the 2013 Tully Ice Harvest Festival did not take place due to the weather which caused the ice to be too thin to cut. The ice is often used in keeping items cold rather than making things with it. Gordon Howard of Tully, New York provides insight on the harvesting process. The footage and interview was conducted in February of 2009 by Peter Chen.

Tully Ice Harvest Festival

This video was taken from the annual Ice Harvest Festival in February of 2009 on the Green Lake of Tully, New York, which is about an hour south of Syracuse. The festival originally started with Ice Farmers that moved to Tully to find work. They would come from all over the world just to harvest the ice found here.

The video, narrated by Gordon Howard, a volunteer at the festival, shows the process of the harvest of the ice; from the clearing of the snow, to the scoring into 18-inch square blocks, to the transporting via horse-drawn carriages to the ice house.

Howard proceeds to discuss the history and economical impact that the festival has on the town, along with the importance of the help of the townspeople and invites any and everyone to come out and attend.

NY Ice Harvesting Festival

Tully, NY presented there annual Ice Harvesting Festival (Filmed Feb. /2009). This video shows the process of ice harvesting among members of the Tully community. The man speaking in the interview is Gordon Howard (Interviewed by Peter Chen). He describes the festival, the process of ice harvesting and how it is used in a world that now has refrigeration.

When people usually think of  the harvesting of ice, they think of a much older time period without things like refrigerators or in-door plumbing. This videography shows that not only is ice harvesting still happening, but it still serves a valued purpose. This Festival gets the entire family involved for the shared, learning experience of ice harvesting.

The Annual Tully Ice Harvest Festival

Here’s the video I put together from footage and an interview provided to us from the annual Tully, N.Y. Ice Harvest Festival in February of 2009. The harvest itself is visually compelling and the process that is explained in the video by volunteer Gordon Howard is very detailed. It is very interesting to see how people kept their goods cold in the time before electricity and refrigeration.

This next project we did in my Mutlimedia Storytelling Class is a perfect example of what Multimedia Storytelling really is. In my project I used various shots and even an interview to make things more interesting. Have you ever wondered what ice harvesting really is? Well in this next project I did, I explain about the different steps one needs to take in order to accomplish this.
