Southern Miss prepares for conference tournament

leave a comment »

With only a few days between the regular season and conference tournament, the University of Southern Mississippi Men’s Basketball team prepares for their  first and could be last game of the 2013 basketball. The second-seed Golden Eagles will host the eighth seed University of Alabama Birmingham Blazers in the quarterfinal round of the Conference USA tournament. Because they were the second seed, they were able to receive a first round bye. Thus, they were to receive a few more days to rest and prepare for quarterfinal action. In earlier meetings during the regular season, the Golden Eagles won at home 74-59 but in Birmingham they won 79-75. Although the Eagles won both meetings, the last meeting between them was much closer than the  first meeting. The Blazers are coming in as the eighth seed; however, it is evident the Blazers will bring the same game plan, will, intensity and motivation from the nail-biting lost they suffered at home during the regular season.

Moreover, the Eagles finished the regular season strong. This is always a positive aspects because they can carry this momentum into the quarterfinal matchup with UAB. Nevertheless, it will take a complete team effort for the Golden Eagles to win comfortably and win out through the tournament. Because of the lack of strength  in the conference and two losses to Memphis, it is pivotal Southern Miss wins this game and this tournament overall to secure an automatic bid within the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Thus, Southern Miss senior forward Jonathan Mills and senior guard Dwayne Davis will be key factors in setting the overall tempo for the game. I feel that if they play well, get others involved in the game and play up-tempo Southern Miss basketball, the Golden Eagles will come away victorious against UAB and will await their next opponent within the tournament. Nonetheless, the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss have a great opportunity to make it to the conference championship game and win to secure a bid in the round of 64 in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.
