Candidates for executive offices voice their platforms in debate

USM SGA 2013-2014 Executive Officer Debate   (Video of Debate)

Time is winding down for the current Student Government Association executive officers. Meaning, the time is near for change, new commitments, the new promises to create brighter ideas for the future of the university and fixing the needs of the student body. With that said, the Student Government Association hosted the Southern Miss 2013-2014 Executive Officer Debate. The candidates were highly anticipated for this event which was open to the student public, faculty, staff, and Hattiesburg community.

In this year’s student government officer election, it will consist of many highly involved, qualified, and motivated individuals who feel they have what it takes to represent this great university as well as the overall necessities and beliefs of the popular student body. Because  each candidate encompasses the three attributes listed above, this makes for one that will be extremely competitive. In essence, every vote is crucial to the success of each candidate. It is important that we as Southern Miss students take the opportunity to vote and voice our opinion within the Student Government Association. If we do not take the opportunity to vote, we can see an effective change or betterment of the university. It is a goal of the Student Government Association to improve each year in executive leadership for the university. It establishes a better connection between the student government and student body. Thus, building a brighter future for Southern Miss and upholding to the quote ” leaving Southern Miss better than you found it”.

The 2013-2014 Student Government Association candidates for executive office are:

President Office: Ann Marie Chilcutt- junior communication studies major from West Point, Miss. | Brandon Hersey- junior political science major from Hattiesburg, Miss.

Vice President Office: Michael Sims ( running mate of Brandon Hersey) junior polymer science major from Hattiesburg, Miss. | Owen Terry (running mate of Ann Marie Chilcutt) junior communication studies major from Laurel, Miss.

Treasurer Office: Kamiya Washington- sophomore accounting major with a minor in criminal justice from Byram, Miss. | Crystal Johnson- senior health policy and administration major from Detroit, Mich. but was raised in Edwards, Miss.

Attorney General Office ( won by default): Christopher Brewer- junior forensic science major with emphasis in criminal justice from Clinton, Miss.

Election Commissioner Office: Thurston Robertson- sophomore sociology major from Yazoo City, Miss. | Allen J. Moore- music education major from Memphis, Tenn. | Alexa Moore- junior child and family studies major from Hattiesburg, Miss. | Alex Washington- junior interdisciplinary studies major with minors in nonprofit studies and mass communication journalism from Clinton, Miss.
